Applicant’s Statement of Affirmation

Oak Hill Academy is a biblically based, religious organization that supports families who choose to give their children a Christian education based in the Christian faith and moral convictions expressed in the school’s Confession of Faith and Affirmation of Core Family Values. The school also welcomes students from families that do not hold these beliefs under the clear understanding that:

  1. Every student will be taught all aspects of the school curriculum including the beliefs outlined in the school’s Confession of Faith and Affirmation of Core Family Values.
  2. Parents will actively support and reinforce all of the school’s teachings in their home, and no family will actively seek to alter or undermine the teachings of the school.
  3. All students will be encouraged to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, but no student will be compelled to do so.

We at Oak Hill Academy respect all parents, including those whose beliefs are contrary to ours. However, we en-courage those parents who cannot support the beliefs and values taught at our school to seek a form of education for their children that is in keeping with their own convictions.

Admission Requirements for Parents

Oak Hill Academy holds the following expectations for parents/guardians of applicant/enrolled students:

  • Both parents/guardians should have a clear understanding of the biblical and educational philosophy and purpose of our school and agree to uphold in their home the Confession of Faith and Affirmation of Core Family Values as outlined above.
  • Disclosure of all psychological, emotional, social, academic, health, and behavioural needs, challenges, diagnoses, and/or histories of each child, as far as they pertain to the care and education we will provide for your child, and having potential to impact the same care being extended to other students.
  • Parents/guardians agree to cooperate with all the written policies of the school, as outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook or otherwise provided. This is most important in the area of discipline, school work standards, and conflict resolution, as well as active communication with the respective teach-er(s) and administration.

Admission Process

The Admissions process has been designed to ensure a good fit between Oak Hill and your family, and to help the Principal and the Board to determine the proper academic placement for each child. Parents should contact the school and review our website, paying particular attention to the Mission and Distinctives, Priorities, Confession of Faith, and Affirmation of Core Family Values which define all that we do and are. Oak Hill wants to be certain each family has had time to pray and gather all the information they will need to begin the admissions process.

Students entering Junior Kindergarten must be 4 years old by December 31. A copy of the child’s birth certificate is required as proof of age for all children.

1. Get to know us. Families are encouraged to seek out information on our website, paying particular attention to our Mission, Distinctives, and Priorities.

2. Read.

a) Our Confession of Faith and Affirmation of Core Family Values.

b) The Lost Tools of Learning by Dorothy Sayers.

c) Charlotte Mason’s 20 principles of education.

d) Want more? Check out Definitions of Key Terms from CiRCE, articles at CharlotteMasonPoetry.org, or a video on the Principles of Classical Education from Christopher A. Perrin

3. Schedule a school visit. Email admin@oakhillhamilton.ca to schedule a visit. This will be an opportunity to see Oak Hill in action, discuss classical education, and address your questions. Upon successful completion of a school visit you will receive an application package.

4. Complete a new family and student application packet. To apply, please submit the following:

a) Completed Student Admissions Application (one per child).

b) Confession of Faith and Affirmation of Core Family Values signed by parent(s) or guardian(s).

c) Copies of the most recent report card; if homeschooled, a summary of recent courses completed.

d) $500 non-refundable application fee (cheque payable to “Oak Hill Academy”).

e) Completed Parent Volunteer Survey.

f) Return completed application to 1886 Governor’s Rd, PO Box 40 Copetown, Ontario, L0R 1J0, or email a scanned copy to admin@oakhillhamilton.ca and bring the original to the family interview.

5. Schedule a family interview. Both parents (if applicable) and the prospective student(s) will meet with the Principal and members from the school leadership team for an interview. During the interview there will be time allocated for discussing the school’s Confession of Faith, Affirmation of Core Family Values, and the readings listed above.

6. Student assessment. During the interview process students will complete reading, writing and mathematics placement tests to determine appropriate grade enrolment.

7. Student audit of their intended class. New students may be required to audit their intended class for approximately 3-5 school days, at the discretion of the administration. This gives both the school and the family an opportunity to assess the student’s ability to participate respectfully in a class setting under the care and authority of the teacher, and to validate their grade placement.

8. Notification in writing. Your family will be notified of Oak Hill Academy’s decision in writing.

9. Enrolment. Families that have been accepted for enrolment will be required to provide a $500 non-refundable payment per family (to be deducted from annual tuition) within one week of their notification to secure a spot in their respective class(es).

Additional Notes

The Admissions Team will determine the proper grade level placement for each student using the assessments and interviews. Many factors are considered and weighed when making this determination with the goal being the best possible fit for each child. While parental input is important, the Admissions Team (comprising of the Principal and representatives of the Board and faculty) is ultimately responsible for placement within the school, and such a decision solely rests with the school. Input regarding the needs of children is welcome. For communication purposes, it is best to provide this in writing.

We may deny acceptance at any point during the admissions process if it becomes apparent that (i) there is a misalignment between the purpose, values, doctrine, and/or environment of the school and that of the family; and (ii) the school is not suitable environment for a particular child or family, or is unable to meet the needs of a particular child or family. Oak Hill Academy also reserves the right to request parents or guardians to withdraw any student who does not adjust to our school environment.

Thank you for your interest in our school!
