Mr. Van Santen grew up in Southwest Ontario in a family of six boys. He was blessed (although didn’t always think so) to attend Christian K-12 school and had some rough character edges worn down by spending nearly a decade working on one of those Oxford County famous dairy farms, usually with a shovel in hand. After high school, Jonathan attended Redeemer University in Ancaster, Ontario, where he graduated with a history degree and a B.Ed. in Education. Jonathan also holds an M.Ed. from Dordt University in Teacher Leadership. He loves to sing and listen to Baroque choral music, jog slowly in the outdoors, read, and experiment with amateur home-cooking.
For the past seven years Jonathan has been living and working in Yantai, China at the Yantai Huasheng International School (YHIS). Beginning as a high school social studies teacher he has been privileged to hold several leadership roles at the school most recently as the Secondary Principal.
All of this pales in comparison, however, to Jonathan’s greatest achievement of life: marrying his beautiful wife Rebekah. They have two wonderful little girls (and a third child on the way) who serve as great, precious reminders that children are not innately civilized. It is this recognition – and God’s grace – that keeps them focused in both education and parenting.
Mrs. Sloots is very excited to be teaching JKB at Oak Hill Academy. After travelling Australia for two years with a missions organization, Hannah completed her Bachelor of Arts and Music at Redeemer University, and then received her Masters of Community Music from Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. For the past three years, she has been working as a child and youth worker in Grimsby.
Hannah’s sister attended an information night for a classical education school plant, and called her right away, sharing that she thinks classical education would be a great fit for her. Hannah agreed.
Hannah has a deep love for seeing families thrive, and her experiences of being the oldest child of six, working as a nanny, and working closely with struggling families in her child and youth position have been wonderful opportunities to invest in the lives of young people around her.
When Hannah isn’t teaching at Oak Hill, you can find her drinking a quality cup of coffee, reading memoirs, writing and performing original music, and hanging out with her family. Hannah has been married to Nathan for five years. They live downtown in Hamilton.
Julie Smith teaches the Kinder Plus class at Oak Hill Academy. She graduated from Calvin College with an honours degree in Special Education. She began her teaching career as a Senior Kindergarten teacher and transitioned to oversee the Learning Assistance Department in a Christian high school. For two decades, she had the joy of staying at home with her six children. She was blessed to homeschool for many of those years and explored various educational methods and curricula including the classical approach and Charlotte Mason. She also was trained as an Orton-Gillingham tutor and taught children with learning disabilities to read using this phonics-based, multisensory approach.
Julie loves to spend time with her husband, Kevin, and her children. In the summer, they go camping at Killbear Provincial Park in their tent trailer, or take a camping road trip to explore Canada. Julie also enjoys playing board games, going on hikes, and baking. She loves reading books to her children and is excited to share this love of books with her students.
Julie hopes to point each of her students to Jesus and the gospel message as they learn together and explore God’s creation.
Miss Tigchelaar, is looking forward to teaching Grade 3 at OHA this coming fall. She completed a B.A. in French Studies and Music at Redeemer University, and recently graduated from Niagara University with a Masters in Science of Education. She grew up in the Niagara region on her family’s strawberry farm, but will be moving to Copetown this summer.
Mrs. Burgsma serves as Office Administrator of Oak Hill Academy. Danielle received a Bachelor of Education from Redeemer University, and spent a few years teaching before moving into administrative roles at a think tank and non-profit, and shortly thereafter beginning a family. Her love for education and knack for administration came together in a perfect opportunity to serve at her children’s school. Having grown up attending Christian schools, Danielle and her husband, Jordan, are grateful to have the opportunity to send their own children to Oak Hill where they are deeply loved and known by their teachers, peers, and community. Danielle loves chilly days indoors – baking custom cakes and other sweet treats, and warm days outdoors – gardening, camping, and hiking Hamilton’s great trails.
Mrs. Lensink grew up on a flower farm and country market which grew her appreciation and fondness for animals, nature, and people. She grew deeply in her faith and perspective by attending YWAM in Australia and Thailand. Upon returning, she attended Mohawk College and worked as a Therapeutic Recreationist for 10+ years within Long Term Care. It was here where interests were ignited for enhancing the lives around her through conversations, events, volunteers, and celebrating legacies. Her authentic and down to earth style of caring and communicating has allowed others to blossom and create joy in their daily lives.
Mrs. Lensink is happily married to Jon with three children attending Oak Hill Academy. Her home is filled with baking, singing, art, nature, and thoughtful conversations. Mrs. Lensink’s home is your home. She looks forward to conversations with families and partners who care deeply about their faith, family, school, and legacy. Most importantly, she is excited about the chance to live out her values through this role.
